So if you're a person who hates the suburbs and wants to live in the center of town, where would be some great places to look?

Just so we're clear, urban means walkability, higher density, etc. Not necessarily the most "trendy" parts of town.

Here's my list of relatively cheap, urban areas. In each category, they are listed in my personal order of preference.

Very Cheap
Pittsburgh
Cleveland
Louisville
Rochester
Omaha
Cincinnati
Saint Louis

Kind of Cheap
Minneapolis-Saint Paul
Baltimore
Atlanta
Milwaukee
Providence

A Bit Pricey But Worth It
Chicago
Philadelphia
Seattle

New Orleans and it probably offers a higher probability of a better urban lifestyle than most of what the above post lists.

I agree that this is a good list and would add Buffalo to the very cheap list. Perhaps Milwaukee too. You could probably do smaller cities like Syracuse, Albany, Springfield MA, Grand Rapids, Akron, Lansing/East Lansing and Toledo, among some others.

Just a shameless plug, if you were interested in Syracuse, neighborhoods like Eastwood, the West End and perhaps Court-Woodlawn would fit in terms of walkability, some density and not necessarily trendy. All of them are generally safe as well.

Isn't urban living trendy nowadays? I would think "non-trendy areas" are parts of the city with high crime or something that makes it less desirable than other urban areas.

Portland, New Orleans, Cleveland. Chicago and Philly are pricier than the others but a bargain compared to what you would find in Miami, LA or NYC.

Not sure. But I just meant in terms of sophistication. High scale. I believe there are urbanized areas that aren't designed around the rich. I think they exist, mainly on the EC if anything (or possibly the Midwest).
