Michigan, especially SE michigan, is loaded with southern transplants and their descendents. Many of them carried their culture here with them. I grew up in Ohio and I had never heard of "soup beans" and unsweetened cornbread until I moved to Michigan, but these are apparently staples in many parts of the South. BBQ restaurants, pickup trucks with gun racks, deer hunting, and even Confederate flags are all common sights up here.

Seconded. Here in my city there's a good ammount of confederate flags, a couple of BBQ restaurants that are heavily southern themed, and alot of the people in the country act so southern you'd expect them to have accents. Lots of bible thumpers

I can't speak to Michigan as a whole, but I did notice this during a month I spent in the Detroit area. It was explained to me that back during Detroit's boomtown glory days, the majority of people who moved there to work in the Auto industry were from the South. Both Black and White alike.
In some of the Detroit suburbs I picked up on more than a few Southern accents, some of them pretty thick even.
Southern Missouri is pretty solidly Southern. There's little to no cultural difference between there and Arkansas, really. I also noticed a very heavy Southern vibe in the Southern parts of both Ohio and Illinois.
