Have been looking for about 2 years now-a serious
question about our country...are there any low crime,
high quality of life & affordable areas to live in that
that offer accessibitiy to goods & services? I'm not
looking for a paradise or prestige, just something nice & safe
...or is that what you pay for...plain & simple?
Des Moines IA, Madison WI, Wichita KS, Sioux Falls SD. A bit bigger and low cost with very high standard of living is Omaha/Lincoln NE. Even bigger, but a bit more expensive is Kansas City and St Louis.
Yes. All over actually. Just live on the outskirts of most major cities in the Midwest and South. I grew up outside of Cleveland and can tell you that most of the region is safe and it's affordable. Just avoid the rough inner city areas.
I find most safe areas to be expensive. That is what you are paying for. But then again, it's all relative. I could live rather nicely on 40k a year. To someone else, that would be poverty to them.
Agree with 5Lakes, outside of Major cities and most of the Country is more affordable and safe. I know around this area (west side of Michigan right on Lake Michigan) is very safe and low cost of living as well.

You can rent an updated apartment for $600-$900 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The cost of living isn't the lowest in the country, but relative to the excellent schools, extremely high quality of life, and overall wonderful city atmosphere, Ann Arbor fits your criteria. Pretty much anywhere in Ann Arbor you will get a wonderful location and literally everything is in a walking distance. Great entertainment (the University of Michigan is there) such as orchestra concerts, athletic events, art fairs, etc. Also, very good restaurants and night life.
The market is really good there for buying and you can easily find something nice for relatively a cheap amount. If downtown is too pricy than try the Bryant-Pattengil West district of Ann Arbor. There are a lot of brand new, very cheap homes walking distance away from a lot of major stores.
