I-90 is tolled because, like many other Northeastern interstates, it was built by the State governments (including NY and MA), long before the Federal Interstate Highway Act was enacted to provide Federal construction funding. The Pennsylvania Turnpike dating from about 1940, is possibly the oldest of all, and while it looks old, its mountain tunnels were a marvel of engineering at the time.
Several people have mentioned I-81. While it's very scenic, I should mention that I-81 has TWICE the ratio of tractor-trailers, as other interstates have (at least the VA portion does, anyway).
You are talking about the NY tollway ? Most of the toll roads in this country were built with a pay out date . Same in il.we know that never happened anywhere that I know of. The PA. Turnpike 1935.
It may be an overstatement, but, was the first Interstate I set foot in/ on / combo of both, in the trucking business ,in Iowa for 25 years. Then in the 70s moved to Chicago, was in Logistics for the next 40 years, still am, in a way. ( I am half owner of consulting / logistics co. ) in all those years I-80 was the main route of travel across the Country for trucks/freight. Everyday, we always started out getting on I-80 east and west, even if it was just for a few miles in order to intersect with an other Big roads.
95 has a reputation. I personally dislike it because of the bland stretches of highway in the south plus the traffic issues in the metros it goes through.
Over the years I have come to the conclusion that ALL Interstates are made for big trucks.cars are an afterthought ,except in metro areas of big cities where travel to and from work. If you are a person who finds himself uncomfortable by big rigs , then start taking the blue roads, highways that are mostly forgotten , run along side the Interstates and can be rewarding with little tastes of history, local charm , and just a slower pace, which can be comforting .
And too think, the Interstates were not meant to be toll roads ! In. And Il. Have done it too with I-90. I am not sure how they got around that part of the Interstate program rules.
I guess I am so used to tolls (I feel like half to more in the NE are tolled to begin with) I dont even think about it
95 has other tolls already in NJ, MD, and DE
NJ just completed the dual high-way (oddly 295 nearly runs directly next to the NJTP from 7a to exit 2 of the NJTP - sometime literally right next to it I mean right next to it) of the NJ Turnpike now down past the PA Turnpike connector - just come down through there today and it looks they already have the new 95 signage to exit on what is now 276 ready for 95
today the 95 actual road just kind of ends right past route 1 in Mercer County NJ and just becomes 295 - If you never got off 95 heading north from just south of Wilmington DE you would literally end up right back where you started - sort of a 100 beltway of sorts though cant think of anyone that would do that
