I've seen a number of terms thrown around for the Great Lakes region in a way to sort of fit the schema people use for referring to the West Coast and the East Coast.
The most popular ones seem to be the North Coast, Fresh Coast, and Third Coast with various organizations and/or festivals taking place in the area taking one of those names.
Of these, which do you like best? Are there other notable ones you've heard used before? Do you think it makes sense to sort of unify the identity of the region using any of these terms (rather than say using the Midwest or Upper Midwest)?
Go figure. I've lived in northern Ohio/southern Michigan my entire life, within a stone's throw, so to speak, of the Great Lakes, and I've never heard our region referred to as any coast at all, nor even heard anyone mention this topic in conversation.
Even though I live in Michigan, I just don't think of our beautiful state as having a true "coast", so I think "the Great Lakes Region" is a pretty accurate and fitting title.
Funny that those who live in the Great Lakes Region don't even think of this. If you Google it (which I did because of this thread), it calls it a coast pretty much everywhere. Who cares? It is what it is.

Just from the sky looking down by plane. I think most would think... even say the "Coastline" of PA, OH, MI, IN, IL, WI, and ON(Ontario). Because of the size of the "Great Lakes", and on a bright sunny day? Can take on colors of the Caribbean. But of course, on the ground we all say the "Lakeshore".
Still.... you look out a plane window? Coming in to land at O'Hare from the south or east, and see THIS... You certainly might say... "THE COASTLINE OF CHICAGO, ILLINIOS".
The Gulf Coast has claimed the "Third Coast" title already and Great Lakes is perfect because the area is not coastal.
How is it not coastal? They are seas and they are directly connected and navigable to the Atlantic Ocean. Duluth, Cleveland, Toronto, Chicago, Green Bay, they're all major ports. Duluth-Superior's nickname is Twin Ports. The Irish Sea is roughly the same size as Lake Superior. Is Dublin not coastal?
They're just the Great Lakes. Not north, fresh, third or otherwise.
I've flown over the lakes many many times and they're gorgeous, but even flying over the largest stretches of Superior and Michigan (and especially Ontario, Huron and Erie) I can still see the other side. A far cry from any ocean.
