Like i've never heard one of my mexican friends say anything like "dude i'm 1/16 bla bla etc." its just so confusing to me why white people are so ashamed of their own ethnic identity that they have to relay on trivial percentages to try and find something to connect to?

When one mentions their heritage is it pride not shame.

I am 1/2 Cherokee and 1/2 German and damned proud of it.

Why don't you ask these friends if they know their genealogy?

Maybe your Mexican friends are all 100 percent Mexican.

I'm 1/4 German, and the rest is all British Isles (as far as I know).

A lot of people who identify as "white" do have some native American heritage, particularly in Texas and Oklahoma.

i'm not ashamed of my "ethnic identity" at all...i find it quite interesting to learn about my heritage and ancestors...and like someone else mentioned, maybe your mexican friends are 100% mexican....this seemed like an odd question.

That's right! Seems the OP is a little mixed up here. Everyone I know is very proud of their heritage and don't mind sharing it with others.

I'm a proud American but also proud of my heritage - half Polish and half a mixture of English, Scandinavian, French and others. (I call myself Heinz 57. )

In my experience, it's because black people or Hispanic people don't know exactly what percentage of which country they are from. How's a black person going to know which countries they came from, unless they migrated here recently? Anyway, not only white people do it, lots of half white people do it too, or if they're mixed. I'm half asian, the other parts are all German, Irish, Cherokee, and Mexican.
