I do watch college sports...and the Carrier Dome is NOT iconic. For pete's sake...it's Syracuse...and it's hideously ugly.
As for "bigger" cities, I'll take St. Louis for the win. Seattle, if you want to call it midsized. Salt Lake City is a strong second for the temple complex.
As for "smaller" cities, I like Reno maybe. Maybe Cleveland for the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame building.
As for small cities, I've always been partial to Metropolis, IL. You know something's iconic when presidential candidates take their picture with it.
I guess I don't really view Syracuse as a big iconic sports school or the Carrier Dome as a distinguishable stadium. But the orange is still darn cute...
I could be wrong, but when I think iconic sports school, I think Nebraska, USC, Ohio State, Duke (BB only), maybe UNC, Notre Dame, ect. When I think iconic stadiums, I think Notre Dame Stadium (i.e. Touchdown Jesus), the Rose Bowl, LA Coliseum, the OSU Horseshoe, the Swamp, ect.
Maybe the Currier Dome is iconic in the Northeast, but I'm not sure it translates nationwide--at least not to the same degree as the Rose Bowl or Touchdown Jesus. I'll admit you have Des Moines beat, though.

Correct me if I'm wrong... but I've always believed Syracuse was the only mid-size US city with a domed sports stadium....even though the Carrier Dome is nearly 30 years old, small and rather ugly.

You're wrong
