we've all seen the map of the usa with the dominant ancestry shaped by county....but what if we made one for the dominate/most popular sport by county? would the entire usa be dominated by football? or would some northeastern counties be dominated by baseball/ or some midwestern counties by hockey? what about soccor in immigrant-heavy counties?

I like this baseball map, although, as a White Sox fan, I think the cartography overestimates their reach (their fan base is much more localized)

Although some teams like the Red Sox, Patriots, Packers, Yankees, Raiders, Wild, Red Wings, etc. can dominate regions, personally I think that the country would be divided along the lines of college ball. Different NCAA divisions, Big Ten, Ivy League, Norte Dame, what have you.

That's a really cool map! The only change I would make is the Florida Panhandle which (as the only part of Florida that's still "Southern") is unquestionably pro-Atlanta Braves. At least my relatives around Tallahassee and Pensacola are still die-hard Braves fans (they say most people in the Panhandle can't stand South Florida, including their sports teams).

As far as a national sports map, that would really be interesting. Here in the South, football would be king in most counties, but a few areas would undoubtedly be heavier into basketball, particularly in Kentucky and North Carolina.

NYC is a baseball town. College sports here isn't as popular as it is down south.

College basketball in parts of ACC/Big Televen country, and some border states - Maryland, DC, Virginia, North Carolina, Kentucky, Indiana, Missouri, Kansas

College football in the south, in Texas, and in some of the corn belt - FL, GA, SC, TN, AL, MS, LA, TX, OK, NE, IA

Pro football in the rust belt (college a close 2nd) - Ohio, Illinois, most of Pennsylvania, Michigan, Wisconsin, Minnesota

Major league baseball in the northeast

And I have no idea what people like out west. Probably whoever is winning in their region.

I don't know of a map that shows different loyalties to different sports across America, but there is one map that shows different loyalties to different teams in each of the major 4 professional team sports (NFL, MLB, NBA, NHL) across America. It also includes College Football.

The site is a project that takes the data from a poll (they need more voters) and uses an algorithm to determine which area belongs to which team.

ESPN did a poll a few years ago by state. I remember hockey was the most popular sport in Minnesota, North Dakota, and Alaska.
