http://gstudynet.org/gum/US.htm

After studying the site above (thank you palermodude), I tried to put the numbers in comparison using the largest metros in the U.S.

NOTE: This is for Foreign Born residents only, Natural Born residents are not included (people born in the US). Example: People born in Mexico and immigrated to the US would be included, but their children born in the US would not be included.

NOTE: This is for the year 2005, and the source the site used is from the U.S. Census Bureau, 2005 American Community Survey. Also China on these tables exclude Taiwan and Hong Kong.

Good Stuff.

Another extremely interesting stat is looking at "Immigrant Stock", which refers to foreign born residents and their US-born children. In 2000, this massive group constituted majorities in Miami and LA, and near majorites in SF and NY.

Immigrant Stock as a percentage of total population.
The Top 4(by quite a margin) are:
Miami-Ft Lauderdale 62%
Los Angeles-Riverside-Orange County 52%
San Francisco-Oakland-San Jose 48%
New York-N. New Jersey-Long Island 41%

Now 8 years later, the Bay Area is now probably over 50% and New York either is too or very close.

That is very interesting, is there 2005 estimates for that as well?

3.66% of San Francisco residents are Chinese-born? That doesn't seem accurate to me.

Well,
San Francisco in this context refers to 5 counties. The city itself is probably a bit higher.

San Francisco is Majority Chinese over any other Nationality... meaning there more Chinese over Germans, Irish etc..
but if you means it seems a little low, not really. Most Chinese come and have kids so most Chinese Americans are 2nd and 3rd generation.

I'd say it's a lot higher.

Well, the actual numbers of foreign born Chinese is 149,167. That's only mainland China. Add in Chinese from Hong Kong at 38,966 (0.96% of total population), and Chinese from Taiwan at 27,463 (0.67% of total population), and Chinese from other areas such as Singapore (no numbers given from this site). That's about 5.3% of the total population.

You also have to remember that San Francisco has been a destination for Chinese immigrants since the late 1800's, and there is a very sizable amount of Chinese descendants that are natural born. Adding in natural born Chinese residents to the number of foreign born immigrants most likely would push the number to more than 12% of the total population of the metropolitan area.

Add in the fact that most Chinese residents live in the city of San Francisco itself, and you have almost 20% of total population within the city proper.
