I'm going to sedona in march and one of my best friends who happens to be black lives in phoenix area. Might learn something while I'm down there. Probably to big for me though...

If you want a smaller community close to a major city cultural amenities, perhaps check out Chardon, OH. Warning: it's the snow capital of Ohio, in the middle of the Lake Erie "lake effect" snow belt.

You might consider Colorado Springs. It's a military city, fairly conservative, and interracial marriages are common here (I'm white, my wife is Korean).

The job market is tight, but the insurance sector is fairly strong. We have the usual call centers but underwriting, claims and district offices for many majors are here are well.

Good luck!

Not sure where you're getting your opinion of "racial animus" in the South, but it surely isn't based in reality. Wow, some here on C-D never fail to amaze me with their ignorance some days, lol.

I would say Greenville SC is a good spot for all conservative families, and families with other politics as well.

Huntsville is cool too. Greenville is closer to the beach if that matters to you.

Greenville/Spartanburg SC, Charlotte NC (SC), Greensboro/Winston Salem NC, Atlanta GA, Nashville TN, Knoxville TN, Louisville KY (IN), Norfolk/Virginia Beach VA, Cleveland/Akron OH, Cincinnati OH (KY/IN), Pittsburgh, PA, Kansas City MO (KS), Colorado Springs CO, Dallas/Ft. Worth TX, Houston TX, Phoenix AZ, Spokane WA (ID). No particular order. I know you said cities, but some of these areas have liberal central cities and conservative suburbs, which gives you a lot of options. I think all of these areas have the affordability, conservativeness, and quality of life you would be looking for. I honestly don't think you're going to have any problems with the interracial aspect in most any part of the country. Good luck.

Austin- Above Two Million but parts of it can feel like a small metro i.e the area between San Marcos-New Braunfels
New Orleans- Around a Million the northern area is quite conservative but it is mostly the white flight burbs of NOLA but even then they should have some experience with Caribbean cultures.
Lafayette- Decently diverse with a large University.
Midland-Odessa- Booming area that is pretty wealthy.
Fayetteville-Springdale-Rogers- Might be very similar to your experience in Des Moines though.
