Big cities would be Raleigh, DC and Baltimore. Smaller cities would be Burlington, Vermont, Portland Maine, Albany, NY and Henderson , Nevada.

A hidden gem of a small town would be Corning, New York. It has a vibrant downtown area with a younger population that I saw. Plus you are close to the finger lakes. I highly recommend it.

I really dig Burlington, Vermont and that whole Lake Champlain area. If I ever moved back east I'd find a way to make it work there, but it's also an area I could repeatedly visit. The Adirondacks and the Greens are my favorite mountains back east, Burlington has a scenic waterfront with gorgeous sunsets over the lake. It's got a lot of great biking trails in the area, a fun college town vibe, and Montreal (another one of my favorite cities) is close by.

My short list of favorite cities that I've visited...

New York City - I can't get enough of it, but would never live there.
San Diego - doesn't really knock my socks off but I'm always very pleased when I'm there. The beaches are scenic.
St. John's, Newfoundland - the people crack me up, warm, witty, and funny. Gorgeous coastal scenery on the edge of town.
San Francisco - I haven't been in a long time, but it's probably my favorite city to visit in the West.
Chicago - The food, the nightlife, scale of urbanity, cruising Lakeshore Drive with loud beats, always a good time.

BAM. I was just about to post the same. As close to Paradise as you can get on the West Coast.

Others I would put in this category:

Savannah, GA
Charleston, SC
Naples, FL
New Orleans, LA
Asheville, NC
New Hope, PA
Rowayton, CT
Pound Ridge, NY (came close to moving there once)
