if you lived with my family, i'll show you what it's like to be close minded... i consider myself an open minded christian and i get along with liberals just fine. maybe that's why i perceive the bay area as the best college metro area.
Connecticut has many excellent colleges and universities. Wesleyan, Yale, Trinity, UCONN, Fairfield University, Quinnipiac, U of New Haven, etc etc. All of these colleges and universities are within a 25 mile radius. Connecticut is very open minded, tolerant, somewhat conservative but socially liberal and while the cost of living is higher than most states, it's a bit cheaper than California.
In addition, you're within an hour or so commute to NYC, a two hour drive from Boston, and you have access to the mountains as well as beaches (all within 45 minutes to an hour.)
It really sounds like a place you'd like. Good luck in your search!
Metro Atlanta has 45 accredited, degree-granting colleges and universities with around 200,000 students. Nearly 50,000 people in Atlanta are employed at its various colleges and universities.
Among the more notable colleges and universities:
Georgia Tech
Emory (home to the Center for Disease Control)
Georgia State
Mercer
Agnes Scott
Morehouse
Spelman
Just outside of metro Atlanta is the University of Georgia in nearby Athens.
And on that note, Rice in Houston would be an excellent choice.
I've also heard great things about life at Tulane. New Orleans is really getting back on their feet this year, so I can imagine that such a cultural city would be lots of fun for a young person.
Also, speaking of the Bay Area - you forgot Santa Clara. It's a great little LAC.

Sorry if I sounded harsh, but it really is a phrase that I just don't understand. I guess it's because if people accuse me of being "close-minded", they're usually every bit as close-minded in the other direction.
It's okay for people to have polarizing differences, but using terms like that doesn't win the other side over, or even make them want to see your point of view. I just think the term "close-minded" gets thrown around way too much, without people really thinking about it.
Overall, Miami is pretty party-conscious with a lot of clubs and bars, with its culture, good location and huge financial headquarters.
