Inside USA by John Gunther. Published 1946. Out of date (obviously) but very interesting. Updated version in 1983 by Neal Pierce and Jerry Hagstrom called The Book of America. Also out of date now. Both books have journalistic portraits of each of the states (48 states in the earlier book.)

Though it is somewhat outdated, a good book about the States up through the early 80's is "The Book of America" (Inside 50 States today), written by Neil Pierce and Jerry Hagstrom (copyright 1983). It is a great read and many of the chapters are very relevant some 30+ years later. Meticulously researched and a great 20th century history of our 50 States. I still refer to it today to get a snapshot of our country in the early 80's.
