"Gritty" urban neighborhoods in the South (bill, cities)

While some Northern cities having parts of town that have a "gritty" feel or even decay in parts, Southern cities are generally viewed as being newer and more generic or sterile. what are some parts of Southern cities that come to mind in terms of having more a "gritty" feel to them?

While not much decay anymore, Cabbagetown in Atlanta fits the bill. It's pretty unique, as it's a mill town in the middle of the City.

Baltimore has a very gritty feel to it, and it's definitely urban.

Downtown Charleston is gritty especially north of Calhoun. North Charleston too.

I think Knoxville and Asheville are both gritty. Athens is rather gritty.

I'd also add Castleberry Hill, West End, Sweet Auburn, Edgewood, Pittsburgh, etc. Atlanta is a bit grittier than most think.

Of course you have New Orleans which probably takes the cake here as well as other cities like Richmond and Petersburg. Savannah's historic district has a gritty aesthetic to it which actually adds to its charm.

Birminghan definitely, especially on the Westside, but there's also neighborhoods on the East and North as well. The city itself is actually pretty much similar to Gritty cities in the Midwest and Northeast due to it's industrial past.

The Ghent neighborhood in Norfolk retains some grittiness.

I have this image of down South hoods as being run down looking but not particularly urban/gritty

New Orleans, Birmingham, and Louisville. There are probably many neighborhoods that would fit the bill as well.
