What would you all say are the most beautiful bridges in the United States? Here is my list:
#1. Benjamin Franklin Bridge-Philadelphia, PA
The Ben Franklin Bridge, in my opinion, is simply the most beautiful bridge in the United States. It is one of the few bridges that was designed to be multi-modal. It currently contains boxed culverts for 24/7 PATCO service, walkways in both directions for pedestrian and bike traffic, and 7 lanes for motorized vehicles. In the past, there was space for trolleys. In fact, within the beautiful stone abutments, there was a grand trolley terminal planned (at least on the PA side). Finally, this bridge is a HUGE part of Philly culture. It is one of the first images that comes to mind when thinking of the city.
#2. Brooklyn Bridge-New York City, NY
#3. Hell Gate Bridge-New York City, NY
Undoubtedly the most beautiful bridge designed for railroad operations.
#4. Golden Gate Bridge-San Francisco, CA
#5. Bay Bridge-San Francisco, CA
Honorable mention:
Zakim Bridge-Boston, MA
Walt Whitman Bridge-Philadelphia, PA
Commodore Barry Bridge-Chester, PA
Ambassador Bridge-Detroit, MI
These are all good choices, but on a slightly different note, I'd mention the New Rover Gorge bridge in WV and the Bixby Creek Bridge in Big Sur, CA. Unlike the suspension bridges mentioned before, the beauty of those two is all about the arch and the natural setting.
Chesapeake Bay Bridge–Tunnel (Virginia)
Mackinac Bridge (Michigan)
