Lately Sacramento has been in the national News with the shooting of Stephon Clark. In entertainment, the Oscar nominated film Lady Bird is set and shot in the city. Most of the time, when people hear about Sac it's about the NBA's Kings or politics, being the capital of CA. Other than that you don't hear much about it because it gets overshadowed by the bigger cities in the state

I'd say Columbus, Cincinatti, Cleveland, and Toledo. Although you hear about Disney World and Universal Studios, you never seem to hear about Orlando otherwise.

You must not be a college basketball fan. Two days ago the deciding NCAA Final Four basketball game was played in San Antonio. The city was all over the news.

Bruno Mars sang about Jackson, MS.

I hear about Little Rock - mostly about crime rates.

As for Columbus, GA, you're right. Heck I lived there for ten years and still have friends there and yet I rarely hear about it.

I'll add Dayton OH to this list.

All are capitols of their respective states.
I wouldn't consider any of those cities though. They're really just towns. I'll take your theme and nominate Tallahassee and St. Paul.

Corpus Christi was the setting (and I think filming location) of the movie Selena (as Selena was from Corpus Christi)

Never really hear much about Lansing Michigan, considering it is a state capital!
