Phoenix is a nice place and so is Scottsdale... But many people CHOOSE to vacation, work, and live in Scottsdale, and in many ways it is a self contained bubble within its metro area (Phoenix). In a decentralized area, Scottsdale manages to be a center of sorts. So, my question is... Are there any other fairly big cities that have a similar relationship with a suburb?
Cambridge MA might be similar in many ways. So might Alexandria VA outside of DC and Jersey City, across the Hudson River from New York. But I’ve never been to Scottsdale or Phoenix (except in an airport) so maybe these comparisons aren’t right. I don’t know that Cambridge, Alexandria, or Jersey City are vacation destinations more than the big cities they’re near.
Paradise Valley / Winchester where the Vegas Strip is might count. The thing is, no one knows the strip as Paradise Valley or Winchester and meanwhile most people think of the strip as Las Vegas itself.
Cambridge MA. People tend to think they’re in Boston but spend a lot of time in Cambridge as opposed to actual Boston which south of the mass pike (80/85% of the city) is largely lower middle class and almost entirely void of tourist destinations and colleges (execution Northeastern University).
