Before Miami was incorporated as a city in 1896, the US military base Fort Dallas was located in what is now downtown Miami. I'm glad the city founders went with Miami instead of Fort Dallas. It's hard to imagine Miami being what it is today if it were named Fort Dallas instead. At the very least, a certain hit Will Smith song from 20 years ago wouldn't have existed.
For the record, the name Miami comes from "Mayaimi" which was the name of the Native American people who lived around Lake Mayaimi (now called Lake Okeechobee).
Although in Canada, I wish that London, Ontario was renamed to New London so you don't always have to refer to its location. Also, I feel that it would help its profile nationally and internationally. Its metro area is almost 500,000 people.
I would also like to see either Portland, Maine or Portland, Oregon make a distinction as well as Charleston, SC and Charleston, WV.

Yeah, and I'll bet you wish NYC to change its name to "York City"...
Very funny!
