Maybe if you are defining gang in the loosest sense of the term, in that more than one individual was involved. But I don't think most urban violence is driven by a hierarchical organized crime structure filled with allegiances and the like.

My guess would be that it's a mix of domestic violence, theft gone wrong, road rage, bar brawls, immature punks and such

It's the sale of drugs and prostitution that generally causes the type of violence one associates with rough neighborhoods.

DV, theft, road rage, bar brawls, etc seem to be pretty well spread across the socio-economic ladder.

Ys the sale of drugs drives scrime but only some cities are very gang driven.

New York City is not a big gang city, its a hustlers city. LA is gangland.

New Orleans isnt a big gang city its just anarchy. Baltimore is a city of few large violent gangs.

Boston is a city with tons of gangs but theyre pretty organized and keep violence somewhat low. Atlanta is not a big gang city, it just trigger happy.

Its pretty nuanced when you get into it. If you study criminology, or know something about the underworlds of cities you'll see why every city has trouble with crime. No two cities or states have the same demographics or culture.

NYC has a ton of gang activity. IIRC that accounts for about half of the murders with the other half being a mix of petty disputes and domestic violence.

Yeah I don't know why there's such a big difference in gang culture between LA and Chicago compared to New York and Philadelphia. It seems like LA and Chicago have like huge symbolic gang cultures, but in New York and Philly, people are just trying to get by individually or in very small sets. It seems more "real" and authentic on the east coast.

Half is not a lot about 80-85% of homicides in Boston are gang related. The other 15% are often times bystanders of a gang shoot out. Id put the number of non gang homicides more at 10-5% personally... IN fact the fact that only half NYCs homicides are gang related is kind of scary. Sounds like robberies gone wrong

There are 160 Gangs in Boston. Thad be like Manhattan having 350+ different gangs... and like New York having 2000+ gangs.
