I saw the thread about Chicago's violent year, particularly in homicides, while Los Angeles has had the fewest murders in like 40 years. Other cities have been mentioned like Boston. So I was wondering, how has the recession impacted the crime rate of your city so far in 2008? Is it up or down compared to 2007? The murder rate is the most recognizable statisctics since it gets the most media coverage and tallied, like in Los Angeles with the L.A. Times Homicide Blog. However, trend in murders don't always reflect the trend in all violent crimes and much less property crimes.
I'm not sure about Atlanta since the AJC hasn't reported anything lately about 2008's crime stats, other than the first 6 months of this year are lower than the same period in '07. That's not saying much since 2007 was a violent year for Atlanta. October this year has been a bad month in the ATL with a lot of gang attacks and retaliations. Almost like a war is getting started there. The unemployment rate there will probably not help either, plus the unseasonable cold (high's in the low 50's and it's only October) might make people more pissed off.
Yes murder is up here, had our first ever quadruple homicide this year followed by his suicide and a jumper in the same building. I don't have exact statistics but its at least doubled.
Armed robbery is up as is theft. Cool thing is they don't shoot anyone during armed robbery here.
Bristol is a pretty seedy area when the economy is good but as an outsider I've learned just live where they can't afford, they only steal and kill in their own neighborhoods.
During the April Nascar race the local news did a story about how cheap hookers are here and went on to tell what you could get for $10 and up...lol
This place cracks me up.
Pittsburgh had 57 murders last year and currently has 56. At this rate we'll end the year around 20% worse than 2007. The city was doing pretty good until July when there was 13 murders.
