By "It" city I mean the trendy or buzzy or "cool" one. The one that is experiencing the most growth and is booming in general. It can also be a hot spot for tourism. Basically where everybody wants to live or visit. Back in the 2000s it seemed like Las Vegas was the "it" city, though my memory might be a little fuzzy. In the 90s Seattle seemed to fit this category.
Right now I think Nashville is the "it" city. Right now I know a lot of people who are visiting for the first time this year. A lot of people are having their bachelor or bachelorette parties there. Tourism is booming. And the population is booming.
Austin could also fit the category, and even though the growth rate is out pacing Nashville, is their tourism as high as Nashville? Not sure, but I think they would be in the running also.
Austin seems more like an “It” city than Nashville based on my circles. A friend’s fiancée had her bachelorette in Nashville recently, but otherwise I don’t hear much about it.
I think Austin. Just based on how it's growing, how it's job industry has grown, the types of developments there. However, Austin has been an "it' city for some time now, but it feels more like one now more than ever.
To Black people, Atlanta Charlotte and Houston.maybe Raleigh
To White people, Nashville and Austin. Maybe Greenville.
To specific foreigners, it depends in the background. Pheonix never gets a due praise here.
“It” cities are not really universal. It depends on you. I don’t hear anyone in real life going bonkers over Nashville and Austin, I like Nashville, but I really only hear about it on this board. I say that to say it’s always good to get behind cultural lenses sometimes
Nashville seems to have a trendy brand. I hear and read about people bosting about It city status or claiming city on the rise but I don't see it successful preparing itself for the next level. I know Tennessee has given billions of dollars to subsidize Nashvilles growth but I don't see them investing to really improve that city's infrastructure. Eventually, low HRC scores along with Tennessee conservative nature will hurt convention business along with its reputation.
Austin seems to be a real up and coming city. Over 150 people a day are moving into Austin city limits. They are well on their way with building lrt that would definitely increase the capacity for growth. It is nice to see Oracle has stepped up to the plate and commit to moving that city forward. The numbers really show the city as a international city tech hub.
Any city that is building a brand of equality with a solid stem innovative population will be considered as a it city.

One of the best responses I've seen in a while ! I think this ring true for a lot of factors.
For black people you can add Dallas as an up and coming it city more so than Austin.
Austin really has been the it city of the last decade. I mean it gets mentioned in the same breath as LA, NYC, Chicago, SF, despite being a really small city. But it’s growing so much so fast that could change. I wonder what Texas is going to do about the infrastructure though. It would be nice to have a highway running through it going east/west.
Tampa is also rising very fast for my age group (21-29)
