Why do you say Ca? I'm just curious. I'm from there and I have lived in states since I've left with more of an identity than Ca. Seems Ca has been in an indentity crises (is it 'es' or 'is'?) due to so many transplants/illegals. What's Ca's identity?
I'm going with Tennessee. I think they have a true identity because there position in the music industry and spotlight position on southern hospitality.
That poll's not exactly fair. Define "true identity." All 50 of our states are unique in their own ways and they all have a "true identity." Just because they aren't on the news everyday doesn't mean they lack a history or an identity.

New York: NYC was the gateway to freedom too hundreds of thousands of immigrants, and it serves as the business capitol of the US. Upstate NY is a completely different experience from NYC. It's beautiful and natural is many ways still. Showing that there can be a balance between nature and development.
Texas: How many states can say they've been a part of 6 different countries? Yeah, that says it all.
California: LA home to Hollywood where all the movie's are made. (Also home to gangster rap :O) San Francisco widely known for it's liberal politics and social issues. It's a big state, with a lot of variety. If you lived in So. Cal or Northern California and you asked them about it they'll give you two very different answers, I bet.
Wyoming: The lower 48's last true wilderness resort. Least populated state in the country. Good thing, too. It has the western attitude and if you're lucky you'll see a buffalo.
Tennessee: Country music capital of the world.
Massachusetts: One again a lot of America's history starts here. To say that doesn't give it an identity is a lie.
New Jersey: Sure it may be made fun of a lot, but NJ is a nice place. Since it's beginning NJ has been a religiously and ethnically diverse place.
South Carolina: The first Confederate state that should tell you something about South Carolinians and state's rights. Home to quite a bit of Southern charm and great schools. South Carolina like the rest of the south is experiencing growth so it'll only get better.
See? They all have an identity.

Texas... California too... I would've voted for a few... but I think Texas outdoes most states...NY may for just purely NYC.
Tennessee is also a good contender, but you forgot florida... but Mass. I don't see that...or New Jersey... but Just my opinion.
I'm surprised that Hawaii and Louisiana are not on the poll. Hawaii is probably the most unique, followed by my vote here, Texas, but Louisiana also has a very unique culture.
