Americans (which I'm one) get a favourable exchange on your money.
My sister has lived in Vancouver since the 1980s and bought a single family home in 1989 before prices got crazy. It’s easily my favorite city in North America.

Since this is the United States, I’ll take a modest house a few blocks off the beach in La Jolla, please. I looked at moving to Seattle a couple of times but never found a tech job I wanted. We just bought a condo at Beaver Creek so my wallet says Colorado but that’s a vacation home. I’ve worked tons in Denver. The city doesn’t do much for me. I’m a summer salt water guy so left coast or right coast for my main residence.

I choose to live in Albuquerque for a number of reasons.
To visit -- San Diego and San Francisco would be on top followed by LA and Denver.
I like Vancouver, too.

So many of the early posters chose San Francisco, but it has really gone downhill.

I live between LA and San Diego and for me, San Diego wins by a landslide. I don't enjoy most of LA.

The rest are too hot, too wet, or too out in the middle of nowhere.

From this list my preference in order. I have weather issues with all of the cities after Portland. Location/isolation issue with Denver/SLC/Boise. The demographics in Boise and SLC aren't ideal for me.

LA
SF
San Diego
Seattle
Portland
Denver
Phoenix
Las Vegas
SLC
Boise

Several: Portland, San Francisco, Seattle, San Diego and Los Angeles. Each has their own qualities and downsides.

After living in Seattle and then moving to LA, my favorites are:
1. Los Angeles
2. San Francisco

3. Seattle
Don't mind visiting the others but no desire to live in any.
San Diego is too sleepy and laid back for me. Sacramento is way to hot and miserable in the summer and far too inland. And not interested in suburban living anywhere.
