Ok, noone said you have to live in the city. Actually if you want a affordable place, living in trhe city proper would be out of your price range to start with.
Also you say you want to live in a mid-sized/large city what do you expect? You are going to have to deal with the crime element. Chicago has a crime issue but people(woman) still go jogging at 3am and you see people walking their dogs at that time as well.
Just because a city has crime does not mean you have to live around it, does it?
I live in one of the most affluent areas of Chicago and their are vstill petty crimes that take place.
Don't cut yourself off from life because of something like crime,which can be avoided most of the time.
