The Texas panhandle will be the next boom in people fleeing eastward. New Mexico is becoming another Arizona, and you can find a place a lot cheaper across the state line in West Texas. However, it is true, property taxes are very high in Texas, to offset the fact that there is no state income tax. So if you are retired, Texas is not a good deal. The panhandle can get a severe blizzard or two every winter, but otherwise, the winter climate is quite pleasant. Forget about taking a scenic weekend drive, though.

I struggled with the same question that you have just asked. I think there is a lot to say for south Texas (south of San Antonio/Houston line, but north of Rio Grande Valley). But summer here is very hot and a lot more humid than Arizona.

Ok, noone said you have to live in the city. Actually if you want a affordable place, living in trhe city proper would be out of your price range to start with.

Also you say you want to live in a mid-sized/large city what do you expect? You are going to have to deal with the crime element. Chicago has a crime issue but people(woman) still go jogging at 3am and you see people walking their dogs at that time as well.

Just because a city has crime does not mean you have to live around it, does it?

I live in one of the most affluent areas of Chicago and their are vstill petty crimes that take place.

Don't cut yourself off from life because of something like crime,which can be avoided most of the time.
