Bay Area and Sacramento residents certainly don't consider themselves as living in the "Pacific Northwest." Nor would Chico, Redding, or Tahoe residents. That line should really be up at the Oregon border, or at the very least, only including a tiny coastal sliver of the Redwood coast going no lower than Del Norte/Siskiyou counties.

As much as it would make logical sense to make LA/San Diego "southwestern," we just consider it the "west" here in socal, so you got that part right.

I live in Southern Indiana and frequent the Southern Illinois area. We call it the "Upland South".

It's more Southern than Midwestern, but is not nearly as Southern as areas such as Louisiana, Georgia, or Mississippi. However, it's Southern enough to be considered the "Upland South"- It's far away from the deep south, but southern enough to have the word included in it.
