Why 8 hours...that's certainly not a day trip. Oh, wait, that will get someone from Columbus to NYC. That's why. Eight hours is no hop, skip and jump. None are close enough to NYC or Chicago for a day trip of shopping, dinner, etc. Although Indianapolis would be the closest.
Some place like one of the three cities you listed, plus Louisville, Cleveland, Pittsburgh, Buffalo and Detroit maybe. Chicago is another extremely-well-located city, as is Nashville.
Pittsburgh would be within 8 hours of all of the following:
Hartford, New Haven, New York City, Toronto, Buffalo, Cleveland, Detroit, Columbus, Cincinnati, Milwaukee (8:02 by Google Maps, same as Columbus to NYC), Chicago, Louisville, Knoxville, TN, Charlotte, Columbia, Raleigh, Greensboro/Winston Salem, Hampton Roads, Richmond, Washington DC, Baltimore, and Philadelphia.
Just outside of the 8 hour radius (<8.5 hrs) would lie Nashville, TN and Providence RI. I'm not sure how the other cities your poll lists compare, but that seems pretty centrally located to me.

Indy would be Chicago, Louisville, cincy, Nashville, stl, Milwaukee, cbus, Cleveland, Chattanooga, Knoxville, Detroit, grand rapids, ashville, Pittsburgh, des moines, Kansas city, memphis, toronto. Between the 8-9th hour add in twin cities, Baltimore/DC off the top of my head
So Pitt might actually be a little closer to other metros than the others. I haven't had time to do the calculations but one of those 4 has to be the closest to the most major metros.
I just did some quick measuring on Google Maps to find the travel distances and times from Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Indianapolis and Pittsburgh to other metropolitan areas with at least 1,000,000 population. Here are the lists:

Number of metropolitan areas of at least 1,000,000 population within eight hours (8:10 or less)
1. The shortest distance between two metropolitan areas is the official route, regardless of whether or not different types of roadways are used. Each city's list is sorted by distance, not time.
2. Travel times are indicated by Google Maps, and do not necessarily correlate with distance due to variations in speed limits and types of roadways, plus the potential for tolls.
3. A leeway of 10 minutes was provided for all metropolitan areas that are slightly more than six or eight hours away. Travel times of 6:10 and 8:10 qualify, but 6:11 and 8:11 do not.
Based on the data, I'd rank them like this from the most centrally-located to the least:
1. Pittsburgh
2. Cleveland
3. Columbus
4. Cincinnati
5. Indianapolis
Pittsburgh outright wins all three six-hour categories, and ties for first in the eight-hour/1,000,000+ and eight-hour/5,000,000+ categories. Cleveland only ties for first in the eight-hour/5,000,000+ category, but is at least tied for second in every other except the eight-hour/1,000,000+ category. Columbus wins the eight-hour/2,000,000+ category, and ties for first in the eight-hour/1,000,000+ category, but is tied for last in every other except the eight-hour/5,000,000+ category. Cincinnati is tied for first in the eight-hour/1,000,000+ category, but is tied for last in every other. Indianapolis either outright loses or is tied for last in every category.
