I have been going crazy trying to find out HOW to find this info! I just want to research where in the U.S. is the best place to live if you havea child with disabilities/special needs??? I mean best in reference to #1 the schools/school system, the quality of life, the services, the recreation, etc. I hear random things here and there that such and such state has the worst public school system, ive hear NJ is the best overall for kids with special needs, etc etc, but i dont know where to find overall info? There are web sites known for their lists and info on the best cities, but the best cities for real estate, weather, entertainment, etc- not kids with issues! I am currently in FL with a 9 year old son diagnosed with a few different things, mild autism, adhd, OCD, etc, and i would move anywhere that meant the best possible, or close to it, schooling, recreation, opportunities, just well educated highly qualified people and teachers and professionals. Anyone have any info, comments, ideas or suggestions in my search? thank you so much for helping!
I can only speak for the DC region, but Montgomery County, Maryland, Arlington County, Va. City of Alexandria and Fairfax County, Virginia all have good programs for children with special needs. I am sure there are other areas, but if you have options that can bring you here, you will find what you need in one of these locales.

Long Island has some of the best and safest schools in the country. The really high taxes are worth it for how much you get in the school systems. Long Island districts spend double the money than the US average spends on each child in school.
I can speak for special needs children on Long Island. I had a lot of disabilities growing up, and now I'm a teacher. can't say enough about the special ed services on Long Island
I agree. Long Island has great schools and great resources. I heard the Henry Viscardi School and United cerebral palsy were good. I work for Keep Moving Forward an intensive physical therapy clinic. Theres also hyperbaric oxygen here and it has been a great alternative and holistic approach. Heres the website if you want more info. When I lived in Madison, Wisconsin, I knew of several families with special needs children who moved there because of the resources in the public schools and the University of Wisconsin's Waisman Center.
