Seems that the issues being raised here could be avoided with some details about the criteria the OP is considering. The question of which are the top five cities is an example. It appears that the OP is using city proper population. Grapico's list of the top areas in population includes some CSA's and some MSA's. It's true that some of the metro areas listed there are not part of CSA's, so there is inherently a sort of apples-oranges comparison going on there.
All of this points up some of the issues in determining the best way to measure a city's population, but that's probably a topic for another thread. If the OP wants to specifiy city proper population, so be it.
Since the question of a place's quality is subjective, it could also help this thread to have some criteria specified for ranking the best suburbs in each area.
Yes i could of specified more.. but the thing was, i thought forget it but didnt relized i published the thread and it wasnt clear enough i guess.
Westhou- true, unless it's an insult or a bashing of some sort of city, there is no point to get all worked up about it.
Which metro towns do you like best when it comes to the biggest cities.
Philadelphia
Glouchester City NJ, Springfield PA, Landsdowne PA, Chester PA etc
Eff this. I'm upgrading the choices for Philadelphia from deindustrialized cities to more pleasant locales. Why you little.........http://www.flyersphans.com/forums/images/smilies/swear.gif (broken link)
i was doin this thread for polls, but i wasnt sure how to do a poll.. so i pressed "submit thread" and then it did the polls.. but i just pressed back and thought forget it.. didnt know it went on.
but any way.. thats why i said "ETC". i was just naming a few towns for each at the top of my head and lookin at maps.
no need to get all pissy
and btw.. it said biggest cities by pop.. i didnt say biggest metros by pop.
In that case your list is off because Houston and Pheonix both passed PHL in terms of population in the city proper.
Whoa whoa whoa, those are CSAs not MSAs! PHL is the number 4 MSA.
Word has it that the Washington DC metro has now made it all the way thru W VA and into the Stubenville Oh area. What a joke this metro shenanigans has become. This census circus is more about what region has the shrewdest most powerful politicians than it is about actual commuterism.
The politicians in Philadlephia should be ashamed of themselves. Its an absolute disgrace that every other region is allowed to expand 10,000-12,0000 sq. miles and Philadlephia is stuck at 4,800 sq miles.
Are you kidding me? Philadlephia isnt allowed to include Mercer County NJ (12 miles away) but Houston includes Galveston 55 miles away.Wash Dc goes from the DEl. border to WVA,I mean what is up with that? NYC is allowed to sprawl 70 miles into PA? SF and San Jose get to unite eventhough they are 50 miles apart. I mean give me a break.
Your best barometer for a united region is TV market. BIg business advertising runs this country and Philadlephia is the 4th largest TV market. Its much closer to Chicago than the 5th biggest market is to Philadelphia.
I hate to sound like a whiner but this combining metro mumbo jumbo irks me to no end. Probably because Philadephia doesnt get to play. Why cant we get Lancaster,Allentown,Atlantic City,Trenton all within 50 miles of Philadlephia. That would put Philly above Chicago.

If anything, NJ is its own state. They need to stop thinking they're actually part of NY lol.
Huh?????
Your provincialism remains unparalleled on this board my dear!!! New Jersey is MOST CERTAINLY a separate state, but like it or not, it is a part of the larger metro area.
And despite your small mined & arrogant perception of things, NJ does NOT desire to be a part of NY. Sorry!!!!!!!
You ever notice how it's always the most insecure, unsure types that are the most militant about greater NY's compartmentalization? NYC is great.......... Are you? hummmmm.
***Disclaimer*** This is, of course, a generalization & not a direct accusation of anyone in particular.

lol not according to a lot of people I have met from NJ. Sorry dude, I'm not small-minded. I've been all over and have met people from all over the world. I know it's part of the NYC metro area. That's a given. If it doesn't want to be part of NYS, then why do so many people from NJ on the NYC board say it should be the 6th borough of NYC?
