Post News, 'Smart' parking meters catching on across U.S.

The brick and cobblestone streets in the historical district of Charleston, S.C., are getting a high-tech touch.

Installation of "smart," card-operated parking meters began last month in the 339-year-old city, says Hernan Peña, director of the Charleston's department of transportation.

Chicago just leased 36,000 of its parking meters to a private company for 75 years. In return the city got a check for $1.2 billion dollars.

The meters are all being replaced with the new electronic machines that take credit cards, etc, although the prices are going up a LOT.

I haven't had a car in 6 years, so I really didn't follow anything about the story, although I'll take the $1,200,000,000.
