You probably don't appreciate it now but you will really miss the infrastrsure, convenience and amenitys of L.I. if you move to a small rural town. I would stick to a suburb of a less expensive city once you find out which of them are cheaper.

One measure from 2008 listed Torrington, Connecticut as the best micropolitan area. I'm not sure it counts as a small town to me or not.

bizjournals: Rankings of 140 towns_ (http://www.bizjournals.com/specials/pages/181.html - broken link)

Another site listed Rockland, Maine among "the coolest small towns." Its more what I'd consider a small town.

Hamilton, NY is great. If you want Maine -- Waterville may not be the hippest, but you have Colby College, which gives you access to quite a bit. If you want truly small, New England, picture perfect, Castine, Maine or Blue Hill, Maine.

Dogcrazy - did you ever find that good place? I'm starting to think like you. I can't move until summer 2015 though and also need to sell but also need to find a lower cost but nice place to live. I'm a senior.

Saranac Lake is just fantastic.
The only problem is that it is in tax unfriendly New York state.

It is offset by a low-average overall COL. Also, there are tax exemptions in NY based on certain criteria. Taxes by State: New York to Wyoming

So, it may be a matter of paying for things in different ways.

Keene, New Hampshire is not bad, It is right in the Manadnocks, and it is not too bad of a drive to the Lakes Region or Boston for a weekend getaway.
