I am a 26 year old Louisville, KY resident. I am a laid back, friendly, progressive medical student looking to apply to some residency programs next year.
Here is what I am looking for (in somewhat of an order of importance):
- Good weather -- I really don't want a low lower than 40 at any season of the year.
- Solid University program -- I have no preference of University prestige. For example, I don't mind going to a medicine program at the University of South Florida Tampa vs. a more prestigious/well known program like University of Florida - Gainesville.
-Decent size of a town -- Mobile, AL somewhat met my requirements with the U of South Alabama, but the town was too small for me. I like some culture...at least a bit of night life, plays, good shows, good restaurants, etc.
-Greenery (ruling out Tucson a bit) and some geography...some mountains, a beach, a nice river, etc.
Here are some of my prelim thoughts: Tucson, Miami, Tampa, Jacksonville, LA, Seattle, Charleston, Austin, San Antonio, Houston, and Atlanta.
I know there is no perfect place, but I am started to think about places. I am willing to give and take with my preferences.
Of your list, Seattle seems an obvious outlier. It will be below 40 a lot, and even in the 40s the oftem damp air will make it feel colder. Seems like Florida and south Texas are your best bets.
Advantages I see in TX:
-More people...more asian americans...I am Indian. Easier to find a community in Texas?
- More employment opportunities
- Closer to Mexico and in the middle of the country
Cons of TX:
- No geography, beach, arid weather, etc.

I would choose Texas
The Texas medical center is one of the best in the world and the city of Houston is one of the most diverse cities and cosmopolitan. There are not many "ethnic" neighborhoods per se.... we all just live amongst each other and get along fine.
Regarding Houstons cons:
If anything, we are definitely not an arid climate. It is pretty humid down here. There are beaches not far either in Galveston as well
Anyways, you would probably be pretty happy down here
Tucson's sub 30 night time lows don't bother me too much. I like a little bit of "crisp" weather from time to time. But I just don't like the super dreary sub 30 highs in my current location (KY).
I have been looking at Tucson, Tampa, Miami (though I need to work on my spanish to be competitive for a residency there), Orlando,
Austin, Houston, Dallas (uber competitive program), Temple ** Any comments on this one? It is a good training program for me, San Antonio,
San Diego (way too competitive), and some programs around LA.
I really really like water...if TX had more water and some nice beaches, I would go to TX in a heart beat...that is why I like FL more and more.
Any other suggestions? No snow for sure, but some crisp weather is ok. I was perhaps thinking Atlanta and such also.

Maybe you should look somewhere in the San Francisco Bay area? There are many fantastic schools/hospitals. It's also one of the most geographically beautiful areas of the country, and the weather of the Bay seems to fit your optimal climate. It's expensive, but pay will usually correspond to COL, and I'm sure you can find cheaper rents across the Bay in places like Oakland.

Great suggestion! Thanks!
I did look into San Fran...but problem is, I won't be able to get into UCSF for residency...way too competitive...that is why I was looking at more "do able" university programs...hence the listing of cities.
If I could get into UC - san fran, I would in a heart beat!
