They used a telephoto lens on the camera to really get that awesome zoom in shot of the Chicago Skyline. Plus they had the height as well, being they took the shot from a blimp.
I've seen the top of the buildings in Kansas City, MO from a Golden Corral about 12-15 miles out. I have a picture, but it's bad.
Which GC is that?
I've seen downtown KC from 7 Highway south of Lansing, which is the furthest I've seen it I think. I've seen downtown from Lee's Summit too along 291/470. Also from I-35 at the southern end of Liberty.
On the other side of things, I've seen the Veterans Hospital in Leavenworth from the 39th floor of One KC Place in downtown KC.
There is a hill near Kingda Ka called Pine Hill which is about the same distance from NYC and it rises to about 300ft. I have pictures of it somewhere. It is about 45 miles from NYC. I searched long and hard for a hill where it was possible to see the city from that area and finally found it a few years ago.
There is no doubt in my mind that you can see both NYC and Philadelphia from the top of Kingda Ka on a clear day. I once saw an article stating as much.
I've flown in a Cessna numerous times out of Lakewood NJ (near Kingda Ka) and I can attest that you can see both Philadelphia and NYC down to an elevation of about 500ft.
]I once saw NYC from Atlantic City at an elevation of 5000ft and I've seen the Philadelphia skyline as far north as Sandy Hook (20 miles south of NYC) down to an elevation of 1200ft. You'd be shocked what you can see on a clear day with a little elevation.
On another clear day flying out of Newark NJ at 15K feet I could see Atlantic City, Philly, Delaware memorial Bridge, and all of Cape May.
]But perhaps the furthest I've ever seen was Mt Humphries in Flagstaff AZ for Albuquerque New Mexico at an altitude of about 20K feet........
That is like putting a mountain in Richmond Virginia and seeing it from NYC. It is over 300 miles.

Ugh. If only Suffolk County was very high up. It's such a tease to know you can probably see at least the Empire State Building and the WTC pretty easily from as far away as Ronkonkoma (50 miles east) on a clear day, yet it remains hidden. I'm still surprised some millionaire hasn't built a 30 or 40 story building where you can have clear NYC views on the roof say in Babylon or Ronkonkoma or something. From Gilgo Beach in Babylon, if you built something like that, you could CLEARLY see the NYC skyline right on the horizon especially when the sun goes down and forms a silhouette. If such a place was built you could even install those big metal viewers usually seen on boats to look even closer at the skyline from there. Have some cool bar up there, and it would be one of the hottest spots on LI.
If anyone has NYC skyline pictures or would be kind enough to take some from the Robert Moses Bridge area (about 40 miles east), I would REALLY appreciate it!
