State College is smaller, is not the capital of PA, and is miles from any large city, all unlike Madison. Plus, it's not exactly mild there in the winter.
Chapel Hill,NC hands down. It's an excellent college town like Madison. It is
very expensive compared to Madison or Asheville but will worth it. Plus you get all the benefits of living near the great "Triangle Area". Asheville is a nice town but as strong as the Arts, and recreation are, jobs, schools and healthcare are weak. Chapel Hill is more solid town overall.
One thing you must note about Wisconsin, if you like it, is that it is very ethnic German in outlook. That leads to good governance and clean cities. You may find hip college towns elsewhere, but they may not measure up on this critical dimension.
Why is Madison "hip"? Honestly Madison is WAY overrated. Too cold, too elitist and too white.
I just don't agree. The Positive aspects of Madison FAR outweigh the negative ones. Most anyplace you may find in this country that is 'similar' to Madison is going to be considerably more expensive, will probably have a higher crime index, and overall will not have a quality of life as high as is Madison's.

Hey, Flint and Youngstown are on the phone. They want the "AmericanUrbanite Seal of Approval." They're everything that Ann Arbor and Madison are not, so I figured you love them and I made the calls.
