We are thinking about starting a compost. We live in a wooded area about 30 minutes south of Atlanta. We DON'T want to have a compost if it is going to attract mice, snakes, and other yucky critters to our yard though. Anyone have experience composting in Georgia? Is there a way to make sure we don't get snakes and mice in it?

I do not like to put anything but organic matter in my composter but that's my personal opinion.

One easy way to keep critters out is to use a compost bin with a lid or a compost tumbler that sits above ground.

Here is a great selection www.baregreen.com/composting-solutions.html

If your compost pile is working well, there will be too much heat for the critters and snakes. Have not set up major composting here but had a 3 bin compost station in KY for several years and never had snakes and very little bug problem.
