I am looking to change careers and begin teaching and later counseling, but I am not sure what is the best route to take. I am currently working in accounting as an auditor and have a BA in accounting. I have looked into the GATAPP program, but I'm just not completely sure about the requirements. Do you have to obtain employment prior to entering the program? How do you do that without prior experience? Any advice would be much appreciated...I have been thinking of changing careers for quite some time, but I have had a tough time so far due to my lack of experience in education. Any suggestions or advice on what path to take to get certified?

Given that the number of teaching positions currently available is virtually zero, your chances of finding a position with alternate route certification are slim. If it were me, I'd look at getting a teaching degree- it'll take some time, but it's not like you're likely to be able to make the shift to teaching right now anyway, so you may as well make it easier when the time comes to make the move.

I agree. Getting in with an alternative certification would be next to impossible in this economy. I would look at the many Master of Arts in Teaching programs available. Some allow you to go at night in as little as 18 months and you finish with a masters degree (higher pay) and full certification.

Thanks for the advice...I have been leaning toward getting a master's in teaching due to the economic downturn...hopefully jobs will not be as scarce once I get out of school!

Be a math teacher at the secondary level (middle or high school) and then you should have your pick of jobs.

Math at the middle and high school levels are in somewhat less demand than, say, special ed at middle and high. It depends what you want to do, though. Special ed takes a special kind of person (I do volunteer work with sp ed students- very draining).

OP, your best bet right now is to get into an M.A.T. program. In most of those programs, you can take most of the classes online. It leads to full certification. GATAPP isn't a viable option right now because there are so many fully certified teachers looking for jobs.
