Africa isn't even poor...just frugal, I think.

Some of the richest people on earth are in Africa. Maybe not in money, but in wealth? You wouldn't believe.

Besides, Africa is a place where if you have money you can literally do whatever you want.

Africans are, I guess, very 'live and let live' people...

Live and let starve to death is more like it, they have enough fertile land to feed the entire planet with plenty to spare but yet millions starve to death.
Africa is poor because they are basically disarmed and grovel in fear of every tiny group of corrupt terrorist or politicians, If you want Africa to thrive arm every single one of them with modern weapons and teach them how to use , build and maintain them. then teach them to stand up and fight for there liberty and never ever give in to tyranny and corruption again.
But the Western world will never let this happen, it's best to watch a million Africans slowly and painfully starve to death than have a million African patriots die fighting for freedom.

Maybe the Africans will learn from the Libyans.

And that has been their downfall. Too inclusive.

Africa is not poor corporations and countries are investing billions of dollars in Africa.
Africa is growing at 5% gdp every year europe is in Recession, and Nigeria will join the G-20 in 2015
most african countries will be where China is economically by 2030 gdp per person wise. Africa just got free of colinization in the 70'and 80's. so there development is inline with the pace it took europe to recover from WWII

bill[/QUOTE Africa has the toughest land to farm because of drouts, which is why Bill Gates
is investion in GMO's for them. also the reason why europe was more advanced the africa, because they
had easier farm animals to domesticate so they were able to have a surplus of food, and europe had better access to trade routes with Asia

The first example is a no-no. If colonialism always undermines development, then why is India an aspiring power now? The British treated India awfully.

Secondly, all countries are corrupt, with no exceptions. Corruption will exist as long as human beings exist. Yet for most countries, corruption does not retard economic development, so why in Africa?

Lastly, well racism is racism.

So, since corruption is part of the human condition, and colonialism affected other areas badly also, why is Africa still poor?
It is colonialism. No one is saying colonialism "always" undermines development, but it has done so in Africa. The reason being is because it has drawn all of these "fake countries" that shouldn't exist. Africa has MANY different ethnic groups who all have their own ideas, beliefs, customs, etc. Many of these ideas/customs conflict with other ethnic groups. It's the same as in Europe, where ethnic groups like Croatians and Serbians had trouble getting along.

The only problem is, in Europe, when there were countries with many ethnicities (Yugoslavia being the biggest "offender") that was broken up so that each ethnic group could have their own nation (Croatia, Slovenia, Bosnia, Serbia, Montenegro, etc.) but in Africa, no one is letting that happen. The Hutu and Tutsi people (Rwanda) should not be living under the same government, but they still are. The Bambara and Tuaregs (Mali) should not be under the same government, but they still are. The Hausa, Igbo and Yoruba (Nigeria) should not be living together, but they still are...

Almost all of Africas problems can be traced to forcing different ethnic groups to live together when they don't want to. It just leads to fighting which makes it impossible to progress economically (or any other way). That is why Botswana is one of the best countries in Africa, because the whole country is just about the same ethnicity (Tswana). So there is no fighting, they can actually concentrate on solving real problems like their economy and they are becoming one of the most prosperous countries in Africa.

Sudan is also leading the way right now - the country just broke up over the divide between Christians and Muslims. There is now Sudan and South Sudan, and I think that will go a long way to ending the decades long conflict that had previously plagued the country. Others need to follow suit. And the main thing: it should be encouraged. Right now, we (the West) are actively fighting to keep Mali together. We shouldn't be doing this. The Tuaregs should gain independence and break away from the Bambara - everyone will be better off. But instead, USA and France are stupidly helping the Bambara remain in control of the Tuareg areas which is only going to lead to more conflict in the future.

Bottom line is, people just want to live with their "own kind". Forcing them to be governed by "others" is always going to lead to conflict, and this is what is happening all over Africa thanks to the colonial borders that were established so long ago.
