How come so much research goes into breast cancer but not prostate cancer? Or is it just me? It's pretty common to hear about raising awareness about breast cancer and looking for the cure on the radio or on TV. What about prostate cancer? About 217,000 new cases of prostate cancer have occurred in men this year, and over 32,000 have died. Is it me, or is there a whole lot of more research and awareness going into breast cancer more so than to prostate cancer? Why does it seem that breast cancer is taken more seriously than prostate cancer?

I sense some sexism going on here.

Maybe because guys think more about boobs than they do about their prostate?

And just fyi, having an orgasm every day severely reduces a man's chance of contracting prostate cancer later in life. Prevent cancer, rub one out today!

Its not about sexism.

There are many forms of cancer that effect both men and women which are worthy of more research.

And besides, the same question can be asked about why so much in research and financial resources have been spent on erectile dysfunctional drugs (even to the point of members of Congress wanted Viagra to be covered under insurance) while advances in women's issues such as improved menopause treatments or better education regarding female reproductive health (Pap smears, etc) lag behind.

The focus on Breast Cancer funding needs to be tempered with a sober elevation of funding and promotion of prostate cancer research. You can visit and consider siging the petition to make prostate cancer a national priority, at Prostate Cancer Petition

Personally, I believe that it is not necessary to negate the importance of funding for the research of any one form of cancer over another. Its not necessary to turn this into a Battle of the Sexes - Cancer Edition.

It would be more effective and more advantageous to everyone's health to focus on educating the public about early detection, screening and overall living a healthier lifestyle.

There is a saying that the squeaky wheel gets the grease. To me one of the reasons why you hear more about breast cancer is becuase women got up and took action. It has nothing to do with sexism. Susan G. Komen's sister died of breast cancer and she also had breast cancer. She promised her sister she will dedicate herself to fight breast cancer and she has been pretty successful, my hat off to her. She has been a great force behind the Susan G. Komen organization. My daughter is a board member in our town and she as many women and men are very active in working against breast cancer.
If you want more attention on prostate cancer maybe you can do the same, be proactive on the issue as she did.

There is a difference when people complain only and those that complain but also get up and do something about it. I agree with the saying "don't be part of the problem, be part of the solution" and that is what this lady did, take care.

a perfect example of how absurd it is is the NFL this month. The entire month is devoted to breast cancer with players wearing pink wristbands, shoes, gloves and the league refuses to do any kind of prostate cancer cancer awareness even though the game is played by men, coached by men, scouted by men, and managed by men.

but then again the league doesn't really care about breast cancer, they're just trying to widen their demographic. Still it's rediculous and very much a cottage industry today. It's kind of like patriotism and "support the troops", nobody wants to be out-patriotised today.

of course AIDS funding and reasearch was way out of control in commesurate to it's effect on people in relation to other diseases. So we've seen it before.

I don't have a problem with the NFL doing something for breast cancer but a whole month when they don't promote prostate cancer awareness to the same degree?

I'm sure the PC crowd will crow but that's how I feel.

The cynacism is quite unnecessary.

Breast cancer effects the wives, daughters, sisters, mothers, aunts, girlfiends of many within the NFL as it does any other organization.

If you personally have an issue with bringing attention to a health issue that effects women, simply don't participate.

Also, the people "crowing" about Breast Cancer Awareness have not put the same energy behind Prostate Cancer Awareness. Why not try complaining less and being much more proactive in the causes that are closer to your heart.

Talk is very cheap.

Women, like Susan G. Komen, got tired of the lack of funding for breast cancer and started raising the money themselves. Maybe men should get pro-active. If the drug companies spent more money on research for prostate cancer instead of wasting it on TV advertisements for erectile dysfunction, a cure might be found.
