The first small town in America to have a non gun carrying police force will attract national attention after their property values sky rocket and they become the spotlight for an enlightened America.

The spotlight may be from career criminals looking for an easy buck. I hope not.
Law enforcement obviously needs tactical weapons, however street and traffic patrol should be held to a higher rule when it applies to un-holstering their weapon. For example, an officer can only draw their weapon if fired upon or attacked or engaging a crime in progress. If a municipality would have the courage and take the lead to develop a "friendly police force" the criminal element, which is perpetuated by excessive police tactics would diminish. When the police and the citizens work together their is no room for criminals. Again, prosperity awaits the first city to ban guns for street cops.

You really know little about LE do you? Maybe you should go do some ride alongs. Maybe attend a citizens police academy. Learn what the officers go through on a routine basis. To believe someone can dictate how and when an officer can only draw their weapon will cause a roar like you've never heard. Maybe we should teach the media to better understand LE and quit pandering to a particular race of people when a shooting death occurs. Maybe we can get Obama to send a rep to a police funeral sometime before he retires. Something he's never done although he's sent reps to some others. We all know which ones.
Having been part of a police force that day to day didn't carry guns, I can tell you that one of the things that it means that one is more ready if not more desperate to use what they do have to use. Ie, in my case, over 25 years ago, that meant being ready to beat the Thanksgiving stuffing out of someone to take the fight out of them as quick as possible.
Long story short, hand to hand is not nice; it is pure desperation and one is hitting without much of a care if they put the person in the hospital.

They are held to a higher rule "deadly force is used when all lesser means have failed, or cannot be reasonably deployed".
"an officer can only draw their weapon if fired upon or attacked or engaging a crime in progress."
And this is different than now how? You think cops just pull out their weapon for no reason?
"If a municipality would have the courage and take the lead to develop a "friendly police force" the criminal element, which is perpetuated by excessive police tactics would diminish."
You really are clueless. Crime is not at all due to the police. You have got to be insane if you think people commit crime due to the police. Cops are generally friendly, they are not friendly nor should be to the dirt bag criminals out there.
How about you go be a cop for a while in some ghetto area; the same players, same situations, same everything, day after day, like a damn factory producing these idiots. There are cops who have worked the same area/regions for many years, and can tell you about how they arrested almost every member of a family at some point for something, and how they watch the teen they arrested years before, have kids, and arrest those kids when they grow up; an endless cycle.
But guess what, it has absolutely nothing to do with the police. The police are reactive, they only come when called. I go through life just fine without any issues form the police, it is amazing how some people just cannot live in a civilized society, as if they think they have some right to break laws and not be bothered when doing it.

So, how are they to respond to a deadly force issue? Kind words? A please? Someone has a gun, is shooting people, etc, how are the cops to respond without a weapon?

Oh Wise One,...please tell us how unarmed police are supposed to stop/catch armed criminals from burglaries, robberies, rapes, etc?
I would love to review the crime stats in 5 years. The USA isn't Britain where 99.9% of criminals don't carry a gun. The USA, every criminal seems to have access to weapons. You will either have cops who will run away from armed criminals or you will have dead cops. I am sure some people would love to see more dead cops. That is until they don't turn up when that person is about to be shot.

As of today 46 LEOs have been killed in 2014 by someone shooting them....if you want a real dose of reality OP go to the Officer Down Memorial Page and read some of the stories....PLUS 7 K9s were shot or stabbed in the line of duty... Usually no one hears about these murders..While everybody had the attention on the officers in New York while one in Tarpon Springs, Florida was shot and killed walking up to a house on a noise complaint and if THAT wasn't enough, the shooter then drove over him as he left the scene...... Never had a chance to even pull his gun... This isn't Shangri La....people are drunk...on drugs, or mentally ill that cause these things to happen, or just plain mad and have guns...
Just like someone above said, go on a ride along,,,see what it's like for yourself...and like I posted when you brought this up on the other police thread floating around here, it's pretty scary when you are in your police car and someone comes out of his vehicle, shooting....to kill you....
I notice that the name of this town isn't disclosed. Smart idea. I'd even recommend that officers carry realistic looking fake guns in their holsters so that armed criminals don't think they're in that town.
