The birth rate in the US is lower than 1.9, way below the 2.1 needed to maintain the population. As birth rate stays low, not only will the population eventually decrease but the demographic composition will also shift toward the old. Already about 20% of the US population is above the age of 65. As mortality improves, the old population will increase while the younger population is declining with birth rate and also has to devote more resources and labor to taking care of the old. Eventually this will be unsustainable. The problem is even more pronounced in a few other developed countries.

An obvious solution is allowing more young immigrants, but I was wondering if there is another real solution apart from this.

Young immigrants is one way (as long as they are not dependent on the present population), OR start encouraging folks to save and take care of themselves in their "old age"...that way, everyone is responsible for themselves...so a declining population won't be a "drain" on society!

Pretty much import workers, which is why so many Americans don't make sense when they complain about the blessing in disguise called "illegal immigration from mexico"

they provide the US economy with plenty of cheap labor that helps the economy massively.

attracting immigrants is going to be increasingly difficult because most countries are aging and developing, soon most countries are going to be competing for work force!

Exactly. Then you have unions that are so against immigration, against giving young people better opportunities, against making themselves more efficient and competent.

You also have an entitled population that refuse to do work. So that increases the necessity for hiring immigrants.

I posted this response in your other thread so I'll copy and paste it here:

Have you looked at the negatives that are involved with increasing the population?

Our resources are finite. We are running out of potable water and buildable land. Our infrastructure is crumbling and there isn't the money to properly repair it---let alone add to it. We have gridlock on many of our roads.

Back in the 60s, liberals were all about ZPG (zero population growth) to the point that many decided to not have kids so they wouldn't contribute to overpopulation. Now, liberals are pushing to add more and more people. Talk about doing a 180!

Why is decreasing population so worrisome? If anything, it means that we are looking to the future when it comes to managing natural resources and preserving farmland.

Wrong!

Illegal aliens do NOT help the economy "massively".

You must be a cheerleader for cheap, exploitable, illegal labor. Some illegals get paid under the table thus don't pay taxes. Much of their money gets sent out of the country.

Who do you think pays for it if they go to a doctor or need hospitalization? The taxpayers. Who do you think pays for the education of their kids who come to school not knowing a word of English and the Spanish they know is atrocious? The taxpayers.

Illegal aliens take far, far more than they give. In no way, shape or form are they "a blessing in disguise". They have displaced unskilled Americans in the work force. I guess if you are happy about Americans getting displaced in the work force, then that explains why you find illegals to be a blessing.

As for unions---They actually like illegals because they see them as future members

Declining population is a good thing for the earth and fellow humans. There are too many of us fighting over the limited resources. Brutal.

It isn't just the total population that is important but the proportions of the age groups. If you have more older retired people who rely social and medical services than the younger people supporting them, you're going to have problems. Since we're not actively killing off older retirees, the only way out of this problem seems to be to grow the population.

You sound like those who say that we should add more immigrants to pay into SSA to take care of the elderly. Well...what happens when those immigrants get old? Do we keep adding more and more? When does it all end? This is nothing but a Ponzi scheme and when it collapses, like all Ponzi schemes do, it will be disastrous.

Cheap labor? That's a joke, right? Their anchor babies are born into poverty and we pay for the births, the WIC, the medical insurance and the more expensive education since English is not their first language and their parents often have no education at all. And, then, on payday they are sending US dollars back to Mexico while we, legal citizens, are spending our dollars in the community/state/OUR country which is good for the economy. They, illegal immigrants, are sucking the life out of us. Forgot to mention the illness, bugs, etc. they are bringing into the country at a steady rate!

We don't need population especially with decreasing water supplies. Yet another element that will make us have further support the illegals unless they leave since you'll see the livestock business start to wind down with limited water supplies and just the cost involved. People are eating less meat and the industry is becoming less dependent on uneducated labor.

If we could all have had babies for free and had them mean more money in our pockets, rather than less, maybe we would have replaced our population.

No jobs. Limited natural resources. People living like crowded rats in some of the cities. No need for worrying about not replacing the population.
