A hell of a lot of people want to be firefighters, and for good reason. The pay isn't that great, but the benefits typically are. Firefighting is typically not a dangerous job in most jurisdictions, outside of very dense urban areas. The real upside is the schedule. They typically work 24 or 48 on and then get several days off. They typically work second jobs during this time off where they often make more than they do as a firefighter.
I'm not denigrating firefighters at all - it is definitely a very important career. But the day-to-day of being a firefighter is not at all what they would have everyone believe. In reality, its a lot of messing around the fire station. Law enforcement is probably marginally more dangerous than firefighting, though in most jurisdictions that's not all that dangerous either. Certainly not as dangerous statistically as jobs like loggers, fishing and roofing.
