We are always hearing about how dangerous and how important certain jobs are like police, fire, doctors and nurses but we never hear about jobs that are actually just as important or in fact more important.
Today there was another police officer shot in my state and he is fighting for his life in the hospital. No doubt that is a shame and nobody should have their life taken for doing a job.
With that said in 2015 the most deadliest occupation with the most fatalities was truck driving. It often ranks up within the top 5 deadliest occupations yet we don't hear sympathies of lost workers in that occupation.
Without truck drivers pretty much modern society would not exist. The freight from food to building materials anything and everything humans need in a modern society is hauled by trucks.
Same with deaths in the building trades there are thousands of deaths every year. Without guys in the trades most people would be living like the stone ages in grass huts with no modern plumbing or electricity.
I'm always reading all the thanks and well wishes to police online but hardly ever see anything about the occupations i spoke about.

I'm not saying that truck drivers aren't important, but I think we hear more about the police, fire, doctors, and nurses because, to be honest, who all else wants to do that job?
When people look at driving a truck, they probably think, "Hey, I can do that. Might be boring at times, but not difficult". But how many people want to deal with the worst that society can offer on an everyday basis like a police officer does? Or run into a burning building, where essentially your encapsulated in your own little life support ensemble (air pack and turnouts) and operating blindly. Then there is the constant exposure to germs, bacteria, viruses, body fluids, etc of the sick and dying that medical professionals deal with on a daily basis.

This.
And also, car accidents happen every day. Fatal ones, serious ones, minor ones every day all the time everywhere. Driving your car is more dangerous than flying on an airplane, though people tend to fear airplanes more than driving (this is something to consider for your question OP; despite the dangers of driving, people generally don't see it that way). I know that a car and an 18 wheeler aren't the same but they're both vehicles on roads that frequently get into crashes. It's not every day that a cop is shot by a perp. It's not something that happens all over the country all the time in a single day.
i see that too, if youre a cop, fireman, teacher you cant do no wrong. but other crafts like steel erectors, welders are even surveyors which have to deal with traffic high spees, snakes, alligators. or even power people with high voltage and high elevation. They get no glory

My dad was a truck driver, and I have a deep respect for most professional drivers out there, but there is just no comparison with police, fire, etc.
The difference is the choices that lead up to the respective deaths. A firefighter pulls up to a burning building and chooses to go in knowing he may not come back out. Same with a police officer driving into a gang-controlled area in the middle of a turf war.
If a truck driver chooses to risk his life in an effort to fulfill his professional duties (i.e., continuing to drive down a dangerous mountain road during an ice storm) he's considered to be more of an idiot than a hero. Same with the construction worker who forgoes a hardhat and safety glasses then climbs a ladder resting in the bucket of a front-end loader. This isn't bravery, this is natural selection at work.
And as for accidents... accidents happen. I could die in my vehicle on the way home tonight. That doesn't make me brave for getting in my vehicle and cranking it up.
I also have an issue with "without truck drivers pretty much modern society would not exist". I'm assuming you're talking about tractor-semi-trailer long-haul big rigs here and not local delivery trucks. While our current society may not exist, modern society would go on. Long-haul bulk freight can be delivered by barge, rail, and (sorta) air. Eliminating over-the-road big trucks and greatly expanding our rail and shipping canal network wouldn't cause a huge change in everyday life.

I work in the power industry, and agree that linemen are grossly under-valued. Well, except right after a major storm... then they're the most valuable people in the world. They deserve more respect for willingly going into dangerous situations to get the power back on so you can go back to watching the latest alternate-reality show on TLC in your air-conditioned house. But while they deserve more respect than what they get now, that doesn't mean they deserve more respect than police, fire, etc.
