I would say, the minute you have the option to work (and still live a viable life unsupported by anyone) is the minute you become rich.

So true.

I have nice things, live in a safe area, I have a great marriage and I don't work too hard allowing me to enjoy my hobbies. I'm rich in a way but I don't have a million dollars in the bank.

I know others who work like crazy, driving themselves into the ground for a wife and kids that are ungrateful. Yes they make a pile of money but is it worth it?

Life is short. You could have a billion dollars in the bank when you are on your death bed and what good is that doing you?

Rich is relative. Rich is in the eye of the beholder. Being content and happy in life is priceless.

Agreed, mostly.

The spouse and kids could also be the ones begging you to have a better work-life balance and actually participate in family life.

Life is short. Value your relationships more than money.

If you can build a highway bridge across a river, not a creek, and pay cash for it, then you are rich.

If you can buy a 10th floor condo at a beach in Hawaii or San Diego, and still have enough money left to pay the monthly condo fees, then you were rich before you bought it.

With today's standards you are rich when you make over $500,000 a year (it depends on where you live, on your lifestyle, and who you hang out with), or you don't have to work for a living - if you have passive income that can cover your desired daily living expenses, and you have all the freedom in the world to do whatever you want. And of course, what it takes to feel "rich" today, or even merely comfortable, is largely a matter of personal perception.
Many people say the threshold is $50M, which sounds almost absurd: with 2 billion people in the world living on less than $2 a day, even $1 million is an inconceivable sum.

You are wealthy or rich when you no longer ever have to worry about money.
