Ask yourself this............if it wasn't for people, why do you need the police and military now?
It wouldn't matter if the notion of one world happened or not.............it would still have people. People are screwed up.
You can't trust them. Soooo, a police and military will always be needed.
Think about the old saying, "feed a dog and it won't want to eat you, feed a person.......look out"
No one said anything about getting rid of police. In fact, the OP specifically noted that police would still be around. Just talking about massive standing armies/armed forces.

This is actually part of what got me thinking about this. Imagining a sci fi scenario where the world is united so it no longer has a need for a real military, and then aliens show up, and mankind has forgotten how to fight a war.

If that ever did happen, mankind would not stand a chance, there is no way all the people of the world would suddenly come together to fight off a common enemy, like how it happened in the movie Independence Day...
There would be so much fighting and debating about whether they are a threat and how earth should go about fighting them, or if they even could.
Did you watch the Amazon series the Man in the High Tower? It's about if WW2 went the other way and Nazis and Japan won. Two countries with total world domination split in half couldn't make it work. There were still "insurgents". Only way for "one world government" is a totalitarian government that suppresses individual freedom and exterminates entire populations of people who don't "fit" the government model.
So it will never happen unless we end up with another Hitler twice as bad as Hitler.
The government would need a military to control the people.
