Magic Jack (as seen on tv) has now created a device that plugs into your computer & allows you to make FREE calls from your cell phone, no matter who your provider is. In other words, it won't matter if you have limited minutes, as long as you make your cell calls from home. If the item goes up for sale it will probably cost about $40/year. Obviously cell phone companies aren't to happy about this.

Do you think it would be wrong for Magic Jack to start selling this item?

My opinion, even though this thing would save me money, I think this device would be pretty much stealing from the cell companies.

Ford has come out with a device that will enable blacksmith-free transportation. Is this right?

I think the key phrase is "as seen on TV." Wouldn't you think such a device is just about as earth-shattering as the Sham-Wow?

Number 1,

GSM is an old technology. UMTS is the new "3G" technology that AT&T are using, and T-mobile are using. The codes that each company uses are patented, so no one will be able to use a device that even broadcasts on their frequencies, that allow phone calls. Simply because of the codes needed, it won't work. GSM is a little different animal.

Number 2,

All of the major carriers already offer some type of "at home" service. T-mobile uses UMA. Thats Unlicensed mobile access. Not every phone we sell offers it, because the phone manufacturer didn't install a chip for it. It uses an existing Wifi network, to make calls over the internet using it. It doesn't charge you any minutes to use this. The other carriers have some type of repeater that you can install in your home that does the exact same thing.

Number 3,

It will most likely be ruled illegal. If it interferes with the cellular signal at all, just like cellular jammers, then thats a 10,000 dollar fine per on air day.

So this is a old technology thats going out, quickly. The other carriers already offer a similar service, and it will likely be illegal.
