News, Cable boxes can dramatically increase electric bill (buy, cost, charge)

NASHVILLE, Tenn. – Energy experts claim those consumers who use a cable or satellite box are paying a large amount of money to electric companies to power the small device.

Laurie Parker is a spokesperson for the Nashville Electric Service. She told Nashville's News 2 the cost of powering a cable or satellite box can dramatically increase a customer's bill.

Bull. I just looked up the specs of the different cable boxes in my home. The most advanced, an HD DVR, uses only 26 watts.

yeah, but if you use the power strip to totally shut the whole thing off, the next time you turn them on, they take about 20 minutes to re boot up, and sometime we had to call cable to have them re set everything...so much for energy conservation, I just leave the freaking things on.

Man, that must add a whopping 73 cents to my monthly electric bill

hmmm, 31 watts X 24 hours X 30 days = 22320 watt hours.

Since we tend to buy energy by the kilowatt-hour that is 22.320 kWh.

At maybe 10 cents a kWh that comes out $2.23 a month.

On the other hand, ours uses a Whole Lot Less.

Zero. Don't have one.

My converter is not on 24x7, maybe 4x7 is more like it....

How many cars? Well lemme see, I drive an electric car 75 miles and then I have to charge it for 8 hours....

Dunno but common sense would dictate the electric car is a heck of alot more expensive

I don't worry about our satellite box and we are off grid. There are many other things that are bigger..much bigger electric hogs than my satellite dish.

Maybe they should start concentrating on the "Christmas tree" effect in everyone;s house at night. Why do we need a clock built into everything?

26(watts)*8,760(hours in year) = 227,760 watt hours

Divide by 1000 to get kilowatt hours:

227,760 / 1000 = 227kWh

Multiply the kilowatt hours by your electric rate, if it's 10 cents/kWh:

227* .10 = $22.76 yearly.

It's not a lot but add up all the other devices pulling that amount like your TV, DVD player, printers etc. and you end up with a months worth of electric you're wasting.
