I would have thought that one's ears were as important as one's eyes, where inspection is concerned. I would also have thought that the ability to feel, of those doing the rope work, is of great importance too.
You should look into the Google Kite project. The idea is that wind speeds travel at much higher velocity not far off the earth's surface. Using a mobile generators like a "kite" can optimize energy generation better than land posted turbines. Turbines off-shore can also be much more efficient, that the salinity and humidity might be an issue for generator longevity.
