Reused is greener than new. Sometimes you can find old slate blackboards in used building materials places or on the internet. Diamond saws cut this stuff like carbide through oak.
Another great reused countertop option is "Lab Top". You can usually find a few good slabs of it when schools, colleges or professional laboratories remodel, etc. That stuff is pretty indestructible since it's made for chemical and heat resistance in lab settings. Most common color is black, but there are a few other colors available. A friend of mine redid her kitchen counters with lab top from a local school and stainless steel from a local restaurant going out of business. It looks very chic and only set her back about $500.
I like to choose engineered quarts stone countertops. no radiation, and so many colors can be choosed www.unistonquartz.com
