Hi there, I am posting this on a couple threads, since we're going to be traveling around, but long story short we're planning a family vacation to NC in March - visiting a cousin and seeing the sites. March 22- 29.
Hubby's got a master plan that includes Charlotte, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Durham & Pinehurst. A lot of it involves NCAA and golf.
So, as you might guess, I am looking for some advice on family-friendly activities for me and my two boys (7 & 10) during the week.
I'd love to hear about little places where you learn about local history or culture, or zoos and things like that. Please share your personal favorites.
I can see this is a friendly forum and I really would appreciate any advice you can give.
depends on what you are looking for- winston has old salem, sci works, children's museum, bethabara but that's kinda boring to me as is old salem but it's the history of this area
Keep in mind that March weather is variable. Dress in layers so you can peel off as the day warms. I checked the weather page and noted that March temps go from lows in the 30s to 60s. Toward the end of the month, of course, it begins to warm. That's also the time of the year when we start seeing spring flowers. This area is wonderful for spring foliage.
I also recomend Old Salem in Winston-Salem (if your kids are between the ages of 8-12), the Children's Museum in Greensboro (not sure about the age range there, but I would think kids under the age of 10 would enjoy it most), and the NC Zoo in Asheboro (about 30-40 minutes south of Greensboro). The zoo would be fun for all ages as most of the animals reside in somewhat realistic habitats rather than just cages (as you find in many city zoos).
Durham also has a Museum of Life and Science. Chapel Hill, which is right next door to Durham, has a Planetarium (Morehead Planetarium) on UNC-Chapel Hill's campus).
We love both the Natural Science Center in Greensboro (you can touch Wallabees!) and the Children's Museum. It will of course depend on the age of the kids, but the NSC is great for the older kids.
Wel we made it!
We spent a few days in Winston-Salem and Greensboro and saw Old Salem, stayed at the Brookstown Inn which we LOVED, saw the Natural Science Center and the Guildford Courthouse Battlefield.
I wish we could have done more but we had to move on to out other stops.
Thanks agai for the great advice!
