During the recent fall meeting of AASHTO's Special Committee on US Route Numbering, they have approved NCDOT's request to re-route US-70 in the Triad. Details of the re-route and the reasoning for it can be seen on page 7.

If I am thinking correctly, United States Route 70 would be rerouted onto a concurrency with North Carolina Highway 68 from Business 85 in Thomasville to High Point, then routed along Wendover Avenue from High Point to its present location on East Wendover Avenue east of North O. Henry Boulevard in Greensboro.

I had to look at a map to compare what this text in the OPs link says, but that's how I read it too. NC 68 is called National Highway in Thomasville before it becomes Westchester and then Eastchester Drive in High Point. It would be ironic if National Highway (which isn't technically a national highway) had to change its name if it becomes a true "national highway".

The OP's information also gives this as part of the rationale:

The proposed relocated routing of US 70 would provide an alternate primary availability to other parts of the county as well as diverting traffic from concurrent interstate routes.

On the last part, I'm not sure that diverting a US route to the Wendover/I-40 area with lots of stoplights, and confusing lane changes (lanes ending and beginning at sometimes random intervals) is the best idea. However, federal funding (instead of just state or local) on a federal highway (US 29-70 instead of NC 68) is probably more favorable so that's probably the real reason this is being supported.

It wouldn't be the first time NCDOT had a US route taken off an interstate to help draw local traffic away. The most recent example is the Wilmington Bypass. After the last section opened up, US-17 was taken off of I-140 and put back through Wilmington.

Same with I-795. When it first opened in 2006, it was signed as US-117 and the two-lane alignment between Wilson and Goldsboro became US-117 Alternate. After the freeway became I-795 in late 2007, US-117 Alternate was decommissioned and US-117 was put back on it's old alignment, though AASHTO wasn't too happy about it at first.

At the same time, business 85 will be decommissioned. The freeway going from greensboro thru Jamestown and high point will be called u.s. 29 only. No more 85/29/70.

All of this will automatically fix the i40 death valley stretch, which will be reduced to 3 routes: interstate 40, and the 2 us routes 29 and 220.

All that's left is for the city to change the signs.

I have expected the decommissioning of Business 85 in North Carolina since the rerouting of United States Route 70.

AASHTO has posted all the applications that were submitted for their meeting earlier this month. The maps of the new US-70 routing can be found on pages 46 and 51.
