Anyone know (or guess ) what is going to be built there now that the building is coming down? I am hoping for retail shops, we don't need anymore condos.
I believe that it is going to be a mixed-use kind of development. A nice combination of residences and businesses.
It is really a shame that this building has to go down, though. Tearing down the building is a big blow to the uniqueness of our city, and also, a huge blow to historical preservation.
Honestly, if someone actually tried, at least the brick structure of the building is salvageable. The wood frame would likely have to be gutted out (My father is a retired fire captain, he said that they were not allowed to enter the building because of safety reasons, they could only keep the fire from spreading elsewhere if it did ignite).
Something similar to the old Wafco mills off of McGee and Walker Avenue in College Hill could have been done to Cotton Mill Square. Or like what is going on over in Revolution. These buildings are more structurally sound, but it is doable. It's a real shame.
One upside however is that they are recycling the old historic bricks. They're very valuable bricks that are going to be put to some sort of honorable use....
